Some forms of gratitude are stitched slowly over time.

For island artist Pam Wifler, inspiration arrived unexpectedly while browsing the “free” books at the library. There, she recognized a blanket pattern once made by her mother, a familiar design that immediately stirred memories of evenings spent together after long workdays, her mother keeping busy with her hands while home settled quietly around them.

Those ordinary moments became extraordinary in hindsight. Through crochet, Pam found a way to honor them.

Her Afghan, created from “a strand of thread,” is more than a handcrafted piece, it is a tribute to family history, inherited creativity, and the comfort of being wrapped in love and memories. Pam invites viewers to reflect on the handmade items in their own lives: the blankets sewn by mothers or grandmothers, the favorite colors chosen with care, the feeling of being held safely at home.

Pam’s gratitude also stretches deeply into place. Her maternal grandparents purchased the family property on Lummi Island generations ago, creating a lasting connection to the island that continues to shape her life today. She speaks of the island with affection and wonder: the ever-changing weather, the closeness of nature, solitary walks on the beach or through the woods, and the warmth of gathering with neighbors “downtown.”

“Lummi Island is a magical place,” she shares. “Nature is so close at hand.”

In Pam’s work, gratitude becomes tangible: a thread connecting generations, memories, home, and community. Her contribution reminds us that art does not need to be loud to be meaningful. Sometimes gratitude is found in the quiet repetition of making something by hand, stitch by stitch, memory by memory.
