Making Community Connections with Constance Drake

At Lummi Island Health & Wellness, we often talk about wellness as something that reaches beyond the individual. It is about having places to gather, people to connect with, and opportunities to feel part of something larger than ourselves.
Few islanders embody that idea quite like Constance Drake.
For more than three decades, Constance has practiced and taught yoga, and for 36 years she has called Lummi Island home. Over the years, she has become a familiar and valued part of island life, and especially LIH&W, sharing her experience, curiosity, creativity, and sense of connection with generations of islanders.
You can find her on the mat teaching Wellness Yoga, where the class begins with something simple: people arriving, settling in, becoming quiet, and paying attention to their bodies and breath. Yet what happens around the practice can be just as meaningful. Conversations continue after class, sometimes in the parking lot, as neighbors pause to catch up before heading home.
That is community, too.
It doesn't always look like a large gathering or a special event. Sometimes it is a shared hour in a yoga class. Sometimes it is trying something new together. Constance also co-facilitates LIH&W's Improv class, where laughter, play, spontaneity, and connection create a very different kind of shared experience.
And then there is art.
Constance is one of the island artists featured in our current Harvest of the Heart exhibition. Her participation is another reminder that the people who make up our community rarely fit into just one category. We are teachers, artists, neighbors, caregivers, students, volunteers, friends, and lifelong learners. Often, we are several of these things at once.
There is another way Constance quietly contributes to the life of our community. Throughout the summer, she brings fresh flowers from her garden each week to brighten LIH&W classes and The Gathering Place. It is a simple gift, but one that says something about Constance: she notices beauty, she grows it, and she generously shares it with others. Those flowers have become a small but meaningful reminder that community is often built through the everyday acts of kindness we offer one another.
This is especially meaningful as we grow older. Community gives us opportunities to learn from one another across generations. Younger people bring fresh perspectives and energy. Those who have lived longer bring experience and wisdom. We share many of the same interests, or participate in community in the similar ways and we benefit from knowing that we have one another: neighbors helping neighbors.
Island life offers many of us wonderful solitude. But it can also offer something equally important: the comfort of knowing that community is here when we need it.
Creating more opportunities for that kind of connection is part of the vision of Lummi Island Health & Wellness. Through classes, gatherings, health resources, creative programs, and simple opportunities to come together, we hope to help strengthen the threads that already connect this island.
Constance reminds us that those threads can be found in many places: in the quiet of a yoga practice, the laughter of an Improv class, the creativity of an artist's work, and the familiar conversations that happen between neighbors.
Community is not something that happens only at a particular time or place.
It is something we create together, one connection at a time.
You can meet Constance in person by visiting her classes at The Gathering Place: Wellness Yoga on Tuesdays at 9:00am and Island Improv, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. See her current artwork now showing at the LIH&W Resource Center's Exhibit: The Harvest of the Heart.
