Good News on Lummi Island: Islanders Are Shaping the Future of Health & Wellness

There is some really good news to share from Lummi Island Health & Wellness, and it starts with YOU.

On August 27, more than 140 islanders gathered at The Gathering Place for the LIH&W All Community Dinner. It was an evening filled with good food, neighborly connections, and smiles. It was also a great opportunity to celebrate how far LIH&W has come and our hopes for the future.

But the most meaningful part of the evening was hearing directly from our community.

Earlier this summer, LIH&W invited islanders to participate in our community health survey. We were grateful for the thoughtful response. Your answers made something very clear:

Islanders value what LIH&W is becoming, and they want to see even more support for staying healthy, connected and independent on Lummi Island.

In particular, resident feedback reinforced the importance of needed resources that help people age safely in place, navigate healthcare, remain active and connected, provide family-friendly options, and to find the support they need without always having to leave the island.

That is exactly the direction LIH&W is heading.

Over the past year, we have grown from an organization getting established to one with an expanding network of programs, partnerships, volunteers and resources. Home safety programs, foot care, telehealth and technology assistance, health advocacy, wellness classes and connections to in-home care are all part of our growing effort to make health and wellness resources more accessible to islanders.

None of this happens by accident.

It takes a dedicated Board of Directors willing to roll up their sleeves, staff who are constantly coordinating, communicating and problem-solving, volunteers who generously share their time and expertise, and community partners who believe in what is possible here.

And it takes you.

We are especially grateful to the generous sponsors who helped make our August 27 Community Dinner possible: Peace Health, and PNW Plateful. Their very generous

support allowed us to bring our community together, share what we are learning and celebrate the people who make this work possible.

LIH&W is still growing, and there is much more work ahead. But we are encouraged by what we heard from islanders. We are also deeply grateful for the trust you are placing in this organization.

Our vision is simple: to create a system of health and wellness resources that helps Lummi Island residents of all ages thrive.

Thank you for telling us what matters to you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for volunteering, partnering, participating and spreading the word.

This is your community health and wellness organization. And together, we are building something pretty special.
