February isn’t just about hearts and candied treats — it’s also, a time to acknowledge something many of us quietly feel at one time or another. Loneliness is a deeply human emotion that touches people of all ages and backgrounds, whether they live in big cities or in close-knit places like our island community.

 

Loneliness is more common than many people realize. About one-third of U.S. adults report feeling some level of loneliness, and around 30% say they experience it at least weekly, with about 10% feeling it every day. These feelings aren’t limited to older adults — they span all age groups, from young adults to seniors. In fact, a recent survey found 40 % of Americans aged 45 and older reported loneliness, reflecting a growing trend among midlife and older adults. Living on a remote island can make it even more difficult to connect.

 

In rural and island settings like ours, geographic isolation and longer distances between neighbors can make it even tougher to bump into someone by chance, but that doesn’t mean belonging isn’t possible. And even though we covet the solitary lifestyle we enjoy on the island, connection is a powerful part of health and well-being, helping protect us against depression, cardiovascular disease, and even premature mortality.

📍 Honor Solitude and Privacy - Wanting solitude at times is natural — connection and privacy can coexist.

👣Volunteer - There are many groups on the island that accomplish great things and by volunteering, you can connect with like minds and spirit.
